Recently,
a Christian student at Augusta State (GA) University found herself in a
real crossroads situation. Jennifer Keeton, a 24 year-old graduate
student seeking a masters in counseling was told to either deny her
Christian beliefs or be denied graduation and face expulsion. She
claims that homosexuality is not biological but a lifestyle choice. (ASU opposes the view that homosexuality is a choice and also believes that gender is a choice).
As
a result, Miss Keeton now faces expulsion for denying the relative
"truth" of a university while standing firm on God's revealed and
absolute truths. She is to be commended for her beliefs rather than
compromise her mind and the Word of God for a diploma. As Jennifer now
faces expulsion, might this be the quality of graduates that we desire
to see our Christian schools produce? How would one of our
Christian-principled Founding Fathers have responded?
Our
calling is to develop the Christian mind and character for the glory of
God. His sovereign hand will bless such a vision. We need not
compromise as God will be honored and take care of those who contend for
the truth.
This school year, the
Imago Dei Group would find it a Christ-honoring privilege to serve your
school community in further casting your vision and mission.

Is a Christian School Truly a Christian School because Christian is in its Name?
The Lordship of Christ rather than merely being Christian in Name
If you have
read previous newsletters from the Imago Dei Group, you will recall how
we often refer to schools after the heart and mind of God. As such,
there are many schools that may not have Christian in their name but are
schools that seek the truths and final reality of Christ. On the other
hand, many Christian schools in name fail to thrive and find themselves
at a loss as to why they just cannot take root.
Perhaps such schools don't know what they don't know. Actually
these schools are not in error or disobedience. Rather, this falls on
the school leadership as schools do not fail or sin. By being Christian
merely in name will not be the antidote. As we have stated many times
before, this starts at the top with the school board and leadership.
Downfalls may begin in the boardroom where individuals bring their
personal wills at the cost of God's good, perfect and pleasing will.
Another crucial area in which a Christian school may only be so in
name is how it honors the Lordship of Christ. Merely calling ourselves
and school Christian when we fail to seek true repentance can be cause.
We ask for forgiveness but may fall short of inculcating repentance
into our minds, hearts and actions. The will of our mind and the will
of our soul are not in concert with the "Christian" name we proclaim.
Perhaps grace is cheap and we trifle with the absolutes and reality of
God. Perhaps His truths are clouded by our pursuit of relevance in
light of popular culture and "wisdom". 1 Peter 3:15 exhorts us to
always be able to defend the hope within us - do we and our graduates
succeed in this calling and apologetic?
Imagine a school where Martin Luther or Francis Schaeffer might
serve as headmaster. Or better yet, envision a school where the Lord
Jesus Christ serves as the Head of School. In the actuality of serving
in Spirit and Truth, this should be happening. Redeemed thought and
absolute truth find their foundations in an education that strives in
its leadership and classrooms to see that every thought is taken captive
and made obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).
It remains our calling to encourage and develop Christian
Schools that are wise in Christian thought and obedience to the Lordship
of Christ. Such schools whether Christian in name or not -
attain their vision and mission of Christian schooling in light of the
Great Commission - to make disciples in heart and mind.
The Imago Dei
Group would consider it a Christ-honoring privilege to further serve you
in such an endeavor of growing a Christian school after the heart and
mind of God - a school seeking the Lordship of Christ in every aspect of
operations.
